Steps Required When a Faculty Member Retires (EPAF)


Retirement refers to one of the ways in which the professional relationship between an individual faculty member and UNM may be dissolved or suspended. With retirement the dissolution of the professional relationship is initiated by the faculty member.

Current Process

This employment transaction should be processed via Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF). In order to process transactions via EPAF please complete the required EPAF training.


All Deadlines

  • HSC: SOM & COP - 4 months prior to retirement, CON - 3 months prior to retirement
  • Main & Branch Campuses: Regular Faculty - 3 months prior to retirement date

Faculty member must provide a signed letter of retirement to the Department Chair three months (Main, Branches & CON) or four months (SOM & COP) prior to retiring.

  • Retirement letter and/or Form signed by faculty member, chair and dean
  • Retirement Form (SOM)
  • Separation Checkout
  • Department memo granting emeritus status
